Bedroom Interior Design for Children in Chicago

We know, as parents and luxury interior designers in Chicago, that creating the perfect bedroom for our little ones is more than just a fun project – it's an adventure in balancing practicality, creativity, and the occasional flying toy (watch out for those!). Here at Studio MAK, we believe that a child's room should be a magical space that ignites imagination and fosters creativity. It's more than just a place to sleep; it's their little kingdom, laboratory, and jungle gym all rolled into one.

Now, designing a bedroom for kids in Chicago comes with its own unique set of challenges. Between limited space and the bustling city life, we've got a lot to consider. But don't worry, we've got the experience and the creative spark to turn these challenges into opportunities; who knows, maybe we'll even convince them to keep their room clean for more than a day (a parent can dream, right?). If you want to check out how we transformed some children's bedrooms, skip to the bottom!

Understanding Children's Needs

The very first step is understanding their unique needs. After all, a toddler's dream room might look quite different from a teenager's hideaway (unless your teenager is still into dinosaurs, in which case, rock on!). Age-appropriate design is crucial because what works for a five-year-old won't necessarily suit a pre-teen; let's be honest, what works for a pre-teen might not even work for a pre-teen. We focus on creating spaces that are not only fun and engaging but also functional and adaptable as your child grows.

This means selecting furniture and decor that can easily transition from one stage to the next. Think convertible cribs that turn into beds, desks that adjust in height, or storage solutions that can handle everything from baby toys to school supplies. By planning ahead, we save you the hassle and expense of constant room makeovers...and the inevitable "But Mom, I'm too old for this now!" complaints.

One of our favorite parts of the design process is incorporating the child's interests and hobbies into their room. Whether your little one dreams of outer space adventures, loves the ocean, or is obsessed with baseball (or all three at once!), we find ways to weave these passions into the design. Personalized touches like themed murals, custom bedding, or unique storage solutions make the room feel truly theirs. Plus, it's always fun to see their eyes light up when they step into a space that's been tailored just for them...and maybe even inspire a few more adventures along the way.

Key Design Elements

Designing a child's bedroom is like painting a masterpiece – you need the right colors, materials, and lighting to bring it to life!

Child-friendly Colors that Inspire Creativity and Calmness

Choosing the right color scheme can set the tone for the entire room. Bright, bold colors can energize a space and inspire creativity, while softer, pastel shades can create a calm and soothing environment. We often suggest a mix of both to balance the room's energy. For instance, a vibrant accent wall can add a splash of fun without overwhelming the senses, while the other walls in softer hues keep things serene (while providing a nice backdrop for all those crayon masterpieces). Plus, colors can be easily updated with paint or accessories as your child's tastes change...from "Elsa blue" to "Spiderman red" and beyond!

Selecting Versatile and Safe Furniture

Furniture in a child's room needs to be versatile and, most importantly, safe (because let's face it, kids will climb on anything). Rounded edges and sturdy construction are non-negotiables to ensure safety during those inevitable bouts of rough play. Multifunctional furniture, such as bunk beds with built-in desks or storage, maximizes space and functionality, making the room adaptable to various needs and activities...and maybe even leaving some room for that indoor trampoline (we won't tell if you won't).

Innovative Storage Ideas for Small Spaces

If there's one thing every parent knows, it's that kids come with a lot of stuff (and somehow, it multiplies overnight?!). Innovative storage solutions are key to keeping their room organized and clutter-free. We love experimenting with under-bed storage, wall-mounted shelves, and multi-purpose furniture with hidden compartments (perfect for stashing away those "special" art projects). These not only save space but also teach kids the importance of tidiness...or at least the importance of shoving everything into a drawer before Mom comes in. Customizable storage units that can be adjusted or added to over time are great for adapting to changing needs as your child grows...and acquires more stuff.

Importance of Natural Light

Good lighting is essential in a child's room (not just for those late-night monster checks). Natural light is the best source, so we aim to maximize it with large windows and light, airy curtains. For artificial lighting, we focus on a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting. Child-safe options like nightlights and lamps with soft, adjustable settings help create a cozy atmosphere. We also recommend dimmer switches, which allow you to adjust the light intensity to suit different activities, from homework to bedtime stories (or maybe even a little disco party in between). Now let's move to the good part!

Featured: Bold and the Beautiful

When we think of a children's bedroom that truly stands out, the "Bold and the Beautiful" project immediately comes to mind (and no, we're not talking about the soap opera). This room is a perfect blend of custom craftsmanship and imaginative design, making it a delightful room for any child.

Everything in this room is custom-built, with the exception of the desk. You're greeted by a stunning custom bunk bed with an industrial-style railing and ladder, adding both functionality and a touch of adventure to the space. The custom paint job, with its rich and vibrant hues, sets the stage for a dynamic and playful environment.

The wooden flooring and a textured rug in a complementary shade of blue add warmth and coziness to the room, balancing the cooler tones of the mural. The overall design skillfully combines style and practicality, creating an engaging and dynamic environment that supports both rest and activity. This bedroom is a perfect example of how thoughtful design can inspire and nurture a child's imagination and growth.

One of the standout features is the London-themed mural that spans an entire wall. This mural, in shades of blue and white, is a captivating representation of the city's map, transporting the room into the heart of London (minus the rain and the Tube delays). The desk area, though not custom, fits seamlessly into the overall design, providing a practical yet stylish space for homework and creativity...and maybe even a spot for tea and crumpets.

The textiles in the room are intentionally chosen to be neutral and soft, creating a cozy atmosphere that balances the bold design elements; more importantly though, this color palette will grow with the boys over time. Custom-built bookcases and shelving provide ample storage and display space for books, toys, and treasures, ensuring that the room stays organized and clutter-free. Featured: Island Breeze Hideaway

Our second featured project, "Island Breeze Hideaway," is a delightful testament to how inspiration can come from the most unexpected places (like a nail boutique, of all things!). This project started when a client, impressed by the design of a boutique we worked on (Nail Boutique Pictures), decided to bring that same vibe into her child's bedroom (because who says you can't have a little spa day in your own room?).

The room's palette is anchored by the charming "Sulking Room Pink" from Farrow & Ball, the same exact color that caught our client's eye at the salon. This soft, elegant shade really sets a serene and inviting tone for the bedroom.

On one wall, a thoughtfully curated gallery features a mix of framed art and decorative pieces, including a gold letter 'L,' a dreamcatcher, and various prints that add personality and charm. The use of different frame styles and sizes adds visual interest without overwhelming the space.

Custom Headboards and Wall Coverings

The custom headboards are the focal point, featuring a beautiful, soft curvature that adds an element of sophistication and a perfect spot for princess fantasies. The wall coverings behind the bed extend the theme, with delicate, large-scale leaf murals that create a sense of calm and connection to nature. These murals also appear behind the custom-built bookcases, ensuring a cohesive and immersive design.

Lighting

Lighting plays a crucial role in the ambiance of this room. We installed custom accent lighting behind the bookcases and headboards, creating a warm, inviting glow that enhances the bedroom's atmosphere. The strategic placement of lighting ensures that every corner of the room is well-lit, making it both functional and magical. The desk, designed by us, with acrylic and gold legs, also features custom lighting that highlights its elegance and contemporary style – who said homework can't be a little more glamorous?

Acrylic Elements

Acrylic elements are a recurring theme in this project, from the handles and fan to the legs of the custom desk. These touches add a modern flair and a sense of lightness to the room, complementing the soft color palette. The acrylic and gold desk is a statement piece that ties the room together...and maybe even inspires a future interior designer!

Custom Drapery

The custom drapery, selected and designed with the finest fabrics, adds a luxurious touch to the room. The soft, flowing curtains frame the windows beautifully, enhancing the room's natural light while maintaining privacy. The choice of fabric and design ensures that the drapery complements the overall aesthetic and vibe.

Personalized Touches

Every element in  for the Island Breeze Hideaway was chosen to reflect the client's vision and the child's personality. From the decorative items on the bookcases to the carefully selected bedding and pillows, each detail contributes to a space that feels uniquely personal and wonderfully inviting.. and dare I say... magical!

Featured: Wrigleyville Cubbyhole

For our final featured project, "Wrigleyville Cubbyhole," we had the exciting challenge of designing a small room for a pre-teen boy who is both a baseball player and a huge Cubs fan. Let's face it, there's no better team to root for! The goal was to create a space that highlights his love for baseball while remaining sophisticated enough for him to grow into...and possibly even host a few post-game celebrations!

Adjacent to the bed, a dedicated study area is thoughtfully incorporated, complete with a sleek desk and a comfortable, plush chair in a rich blue hue. The desk is accessorized with a small lamp and a few personal items, creating a focused and inviting workspace for reading, studying, or engaging in creative projects.

Smart Furniture

We utilized the Pottery Barn Camp Storage Low Loft Bed in Brushed Charcoal to maximize the limited space and to provide a perfect spot for those late-night pep talks. This lofted bed design not only provides a cozy sleeping area but also includes a study space underneath, making efficient use of the room's vertical space. The bed's brushed charcoal finish adds a touch of industrial chic, perfectly fitting the room's aesthetic.

Chicago Mural and Baseball Theme

To make the room feel personalized without overwhelming it with team logos, we opted for a vibrant Chicago mural as the main focal point. This mural celebrates the city while subtly nodding to the Cubs, making it a timeless piece that the boy can appreciate even as he grows older. The pinstripe wallpaper throughout the room cleverly references baseball uniforms, tying the theme together without being too on-the-nose...or too in-your-face.

Deep Blue Accents and Custom Drapery

All the trim and doors were painted in a deep navy blue, adding a mature and cohesive look to the room. Shades of blue are carried through the space in various elements, including the custom roman shades with a fun blue print and the denim bedding, which adds texture and comfort.

Industrial Touches

The room features several industrial elements that complement the overall design and provide durability. The baseball accessories, such as a lamp filled with baseballs and custom wall hooks made from a baseball bat, add personal touches without cluttering the space. Shelving above the desk provides display areas for trophies and memorabilia, keeping the room organized and stylish.

Custom Lighting and Accessories

Strategically placed lighting ensures the room is well-lit for both study and relaxation. The desk area is equipped with a practical lamp, while additional lighting around the room enhances the ambiance.
