As a luxury interior designer in Chicago – at the start of every year, I wonder what the color of the year will be. While I can't narrow it down to just one, I can definitely share my thoughts on a few of our favorites! Here is an insider's look at Studio MAK’s top paint color picks for 2024.

Earthy Greens

First up, on the must-try list for 2024 are earthy greens – soft, natural hues that bring a sense of calm indoors. Some of our clients reside in sleek urban spaces in downtown Chicago (surrounded by the hustle and bustle outside), so the effects of incorporating organic elements definitely help in creating a relaxing oasis.

From the quiet whispers of sage to the deeper richness of olive, these versatile greens can shift from cozy to bold with ease. We especially love incorporating them in living rooms, bedrooms and private nooks. Imagine relaxing on a sofa, sipping wine surrounded by olive green walls, pretending you're in nature – because who has time for actual camping?! We've also found that earthy greens just have a way of helping people de-stress – this is always appreciated by our clients that live busy lives.

50 Shades of Blue – Making a Statement

If earthy greens are a quiet refuge, then bold blues are undoubtedly the life of the party! Vibrant shades like royal azure from Behr, cobalt and sapphire from Sherwin Williams infuse spaces with energy, personality and pizzazz. In embracing the 2024 color trends, we're daring to use these vibrant hues to craft statements that truly capture attention.

Some context for the uninitiated - bold blues are not for the faint of heart. They grab your attention and refuse to let go! I'll never forget the gasps of delight when we unveiled a striking navy blue accent wall in a recent project. It instantly became the dramatic focal point, lending visual depth with just a few strokes. We elevated the rest of the space with metallic finishes and contemporary sculptures for a decidedly modern, avant-garde aesthetic our clients adore. Another favorite blue for 2024 is a rich, inky indigo – it adds a hint of mystery and allure when used in intimate spaces like bedrooms or dining rooms.

Elevated Neutral Paint Colors

Now for those who turn up their noses at anything neutral, 2024 is the year to get on board! We're taking neutrals to daring new heights through texture, depth and dimension. Gone are the days of lifeless beiges that made you feel like you were living inside a cardboard box – unless that's your aesthetic (no judgment); it's time to embrace luxurious layers! I'm especially excited about rich browns, textured taupes and greens; they add a cozy warmth without compromising on elegance. We recently opted for a neutral palette and sparked visual interest through an unexpected rust-hued accent wall. Paired with textured bedding, woven woods and touches of leather resulted in a space that managed to feel both rustic yet refined, sleek yet cozy. I dare say we discovered an entirely new breed of sophisticated non-colors!  Our clients were stunned by how utterly chic neutrals could be when taken to creative new heights.

Soft Blacks – Add This Trend To Your Palette!

This one may be the most surprising of them all on our 2024 color list – black! Before you arch your eyebrows in doubt, let me assure you this is no gothic, monochromatic nightmare. Au contraire! When skillfully balanced, soft blacks create a seductive backdrop brimming with depth and dimension. Who said elegance can't have a dark side?

Far from overpowering, touches of black lend spaces a modern edge when thoughtfully combined with other hues and materials. Metallic finishes, ceramic sculptures and tactile textiles glow against this dark canvas. We especially love incorporating black in intimate spaces like powder rooms, libraries or master suites. It envelops you in an aura of luxury and allure – somewhere between a night sky full of stars and a cozy corner by the fireplace!

Peach Fuzz – Pantone’s Color of the Year!

The passionate color devotees at Pantone have crowned Peach Fuzz as the 2024 Color of the Year, and I honestly couldn't be more thrilled! This Peach Fuzz is a modern incarnation, confidently pushing pastels back into the spotlight where they belong. I’m talking a rich yet soft shade that straddles the line between cozy and bold.

We've been brainstorming dozens of ways to incorporate it already - from modern kitchens with sleek peach cabinets to serene self-care spas awash in Peach Fuzz tones. No matter where it's applied, this color has a way of infusing spaces with an uplifting, optimistic aura. It's practically bottled sunshine.
